Talk:Version 0.4 interface issues
From SLIS Second Life Wiki
Let's discuss here and leave the other page for raw issues. Posting comments and solutions to the issues page will discourage entries.
We need an accurate definition of what user interface issues actually are, because I'm afraid neither of the issues reported on the wiki page so far fit it:
* Avatar registration -- if somebody is unable to find the Sloodle.org Registration Booth, it is not a SLOODLE 0.4 interface issue; it's a Sloodle Island issue.
* Memory fault in Quiz Chair -- if the script runs out of memory, it is not an interface issue; it is a limitation of LSL, and something for the underlying script architecture to handle. (Edmund has already proposed a solution for it.)
You could certainly bring these issues under the "usability" category, insomuch as when they happen, they disrupt the usability (specifically, usefulness) of the tools. However, that can mean re-considering entire paradigms and script architectures, rather than the outer user interface which is merely a shell.
Obviously, if you feel the error messages reporting problems like these need to be improved, then we can consider those user interface problems. But you need to state that clearly, otherwise there is no indication of what issue you actually want solved. (Note: in the case of stack/heap collision in LSL, we cannot alter the error message anyway.)
Tom also raises a good point -- we already have the Issues Tracker on GoogleCode, so why use the wiki for listing issues? Splitting the management of tasks and issues to yet another platform will make it even harder to keep track of everything, and harder for people to get involved.
Forum discussions are definitely essential in working out ideas and involving people in the decisions, but actual problems should be reported to the Issues Tracker in the first instance. (A certain degree of discussion about the problem, usually between developers, sometimes occurs there too.)

- This is not a UI issue; it simply demonstrates that we haven't made it clear where our Sloodle.org Registration Booth is. -Peter Bloomfield 08:32, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- This is VERY MUCH a UI issue. "We haven't made it clear" is the essence of the majority of the problems. Many of the the error messages are cryptic and in need of a broad review. Jkemp 14:52, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Primdrop
I submitted a notecard.
The PrimDrop is only designed for submitting objects made out of prims -- that includes anything you make using the "Build" menu in Second Life.
If you want to submit other types of item, there are two approaches. The easiest way is to 'box' the item, and then submit the box. (It is a common technique people use for distributing items in Second Life. ) You can do it like this:
* Open the "Build" menu
* Create a box on the ground somewhere
* Activate the "General" tab in the Edit window
* Enter a name for the box (something you will remember)
* Tick the "Copy" and "Modify" checkboxes
* Activate the "Contents" tab in the Edit window
* Find the item you want to submit in your inventory
* Click and drag the item from your inventory, into the Contents tab for the box
* Right-click the box, and select "Take"
You should now find the box in the "Objects" folder in your inventory, and you can submit it to the PrimDrop.
